ElderScrollsPortal.de: Warum habt ihr euch bei den Altmer in ESO für High Fantasy als Grundlage des Settings entschieden? Warum nicht etwas Fremdartiges, Seltsames und Einzigartiges?
Matt Firor: Großartige Fragen. Als wir Morrowind entwickelten war Vvardenfell im Nordosten, richtig? Wir wollten das Gegenteil von Morrowind erschaffen. Sommersend ist im Südwesten, es ist also genau entgegengesetzt. Vvardenfell ist fremdartig und dunkel und verrückt und wir wollten eine 180°-Wende, also haben wir High Fantasy genutzt, sehr optisch ansprechend, ganz der Kontrast zwischen High Fantasy und Fremdartigkeit. Das ist der Grund. Und es ist cool.
ESP: Es sieht sehr nett und schön aus. Das High Fantasy Setting der arroganten Altmer fühlt sich wie Gondor aus der Herr der Ringe an.
MF: Richtig. Oberflächlich wirken die Dunmer verrückt, aber wenn man einige Quests erledigt und mit ihnen redet, sich mit ihnen beschäftigt sind sie recht normal. Die Altmer sehen hübsch aus, aber wenn man für fünf Minuten mit ihnen redet bemerkt man, dass sie verrückt sind, also wieder das komplette Gegenteil. Das wollen wir erreichen.
ESP: Eine komplett andere Richtung für unsere nächste Frage. Werden wir in der Lage sein, NPCs für unser Haus anzuheuern?
MF: NPCs in deinem Haus anstellen? Jemand anderen als den Händler? Wir denken darüber nach. Es gibt ein technisches Problem, bei dem wir keine Daten über die Physik in den Häusern haben. Wenn sie also herumlaufen, würden sie durch Gegenstände hindurch laufen. Wenn wir es also machen, würden wir auch die Physik implementieren wollen, aber wenn wir das tun, wird es komplizierter und man könnte weniger Gegenstände in sein Haus packen. Es ist also ein technisches Problem, würde aber viel Spaß bringen. Mit dem Murkmire-Update wird es Musikboxen für die Häuser geben. Man hat also coole kleine Items in seinem Haus, damit man ESO-Songs abspielen kann.
ESP: Wird es weitere Kooperationen zwischen ESO, Legends und vielleicht sogar Blades geben?
MF: Für ESO und Legends, ja. Es gab bereits einige Items [Anm. der Unheilswolf] zwischen den Spielen. Damit wollen wir in Zukunft mehr machen. Bei Blades wissen wir es noch nicht.
ESP: Und vielleicht können wir dann Karten in ESO spielen, wie in einigen anderen Fantasy-Spielen?
MF: Das wäre cool. Es gibt keine Pläne, aber es wäre cool.
ESP: Werden wir irgendwann andere Kontinente besuchen können?
MF: Nicht in ESO. Wir haben noch so viel zu tun. Wie ihr wisst, haben wir bisher mit Kalthafen nur eine einzige daedrische Zone, wir könnten also auch andere daedrische Zonen einfügen. Und selbst bevor wir an Gegenden außerhalb Tamriels denken gibt es noch so viel.
ESP: Sind Gildenhallen für die Zukunft geplant, mit Events für PVP oder etwas in der Art?
MF: Es ist zur Zeit nicht geplant, aber wir haben es mit den großen Häusern versucht, die viele Spieler als Gildenhallen nutzen. Wir haben darüber nachgedacht, aber aktuell ist nichts in Planung.
ESP: Wird Molag Bal jemals seinen geheimen Plan enthüllen?
MF: Ein Teil davon hatte mit den Ereignissen in der Stadt der Uhrwerke, in Morrowind und in Sommersend zu tun. Ich möchte die Frage also nicht beantworten, weil es in Zukunft noch viele Dinge geben wird.
ESP: Wenn wir schon beim Thema Zukunft und vielleicht auch Vergangenheit sind: Werden wir einige der alten Protagonisten, wie Cadwell, wiedertreffen?
MF: Nichts offizielles, aber wir lieben es alte Charaktere zurückzubringen. Ihr habt Sommersend gespielt, richtig? Wir haben einige Charaktere, ich möchte sie hier nicht spoilern für die Leute, die es noch nicht gespielt haben, zurückgebracht die wir seit dem Launch nicht mehr gesehen haben, und natürlich Razum-Dar. Wir werden das auch in Zukunft tun. Ihr werdet Charaktere des Grundspiels in jedem Update sehen.
ESP: Sind mehr Akaviri-Inhalte wie die Tsaesci Rüstung geplant?
MF: Es gibt irgendwann bestimmt wieder Akaviri-Inhalte. Ein Waffen- oder ein Rüstungsset. Ihr wisst, dass es Teil der Elder Scrolls Lore ist. All die Sachen aus Oblivion, dem Spiel. Also denke ich das wir an irgendeinem Punkt an Akaviri-Waffen und -Rüstungen arbeiten werden.
ESP: Murkmire ist berühmt für seine Pyramiden und die dortigen Opferungen. Werden wir davon etwas sehen?
MF: Ja, die Hauptgeschichte von Murkmire dreht sich um das Erkunden alter argonischer Ruinen um Artefakte zu finden. Du bist ein Archäologe. Es ist sehr interessant, dass sich die Argonier nicht wirklich für ihre Vergangenheit interessieren, sondern sehr in der Gegenwart leben. Sie interessieren sich nicht für morgen, sie interessieren sich nicht für gestern. Ein Teil der Handlung dreht sich darum, zu versuchen den Argoniern zu erklären, warum es wichtig ist, die Vergangenheit zu studieren. Es gibt eine Menge coole Lore zu den Argoniern.
ESP: Du hast einige technische Limits erwähnt. Fällt dir etwas ein, das euch darin gehindert hat bestimmten Content zu verwirklichen?
MF: Jedes Spiel hat technische Limits. Ach, es gibt so viele Dinge. Im Grunde macht jedes System, bei dem viele Spieler an derselben Stelle zusammenkommen den Spielern Spaß, belastet aber das System, richtig? Denkt an massive Events im PVE oder PVP. Viele Dinge sind deutlich limitiert durch die Anzahl der Spieler, die wir zur selben Zeit darstellen können. Das wiederum bestimmt wie viele Spieler in einer Szene im PVP sein können. Es bestimmt, wie viele Spieler wir in einer Stadt und im PVE wollen. Denkt an die Stellen an denen die Performance in ESO am Schlechtesten ist. Es handelt sich immer um Orte mit vielen anderen Spielen. Das ist unser größtes technisches Limit.
ESP: In letzter Zeit gab es immer wieder Diskussionen zu Sony und wie sie Crossplay verhindern, was etwas ist, was für ESO ebenfalls cool wäre. Obwohl ihr natürlich die Megaserver habt. Ist Crossplay etwas, das in der Zukunft denkbar sein könnte?
MF: Für ESO vermutlich nicht. Die Architektur wurde vor über fünf Jahren geschaffen und nun haben wir Spielergruppen, die aneinander gewöhnt sind. Wenn wir jedem erlauben würden mit jedem zu spielen gibt es so viele Namen und Gilden, die es auf jedem der drei oder vier Server gibt und wir müssten das irgendwie regeln. Wenn es Spieler Nummer eins und Spieler Nummer zwei mit demselben Namen gäbe, wäre das sehr verwirrend. Wenn ich ein neues Spiel machen würde, würde ich es aber gerne ermöglichen.
ESP: Diese Frage könnte zu umfangreich sein, aber wie ist der Prozess wenn ihr neuen Content, insbesondere Lore Content, entwickelt. Wir sammeln alles was wir aus vergangenen Spielen haben, Bücher, Stile etc. Baut ihr darauf auf und bis zu welchem Spiel würdet ihr gehen? Bis hin zu Arena, welches sehr alt ist?
MF: Es gibt verschiedenen Antworten je nachdem, um welche Region es geht. Für Vvardenfell gab es bereits Vvardenfell und wir wollten das Ganze sehr nostalgisch gestalten, als ob man nach Hause kommt, aber für Sommersend ist das anders. Man war nie wirklich in Sommersend. Außer in Arena und das zählt nicht wirklich. Wenn es also keine Lore für ein Gebiet gibt arbeiten wir mit Bethesda Game Studios an einer zeitlichen Abfolge und stellen sicher das der offizielle Handlungsablauf korrekt ist. Wenn es ein Gebiet mit haufenweise Lore ist, benutzen wir das und fügen ihm neuen Charakter hinzu.
ESP: Ihr habt also immer noch eine interne Datenbank?
MF: Ja, und wir teilen diese mit Bethesda. Wir reden mit Bethesda.
ESP: Während der Übersetzung von Skyrim haben wir einen Blick auf diese Datenbank werfen können und wir fragen uns ob ihr auch ein paar der sehr guten Fan-wikis wie UESP benutzt, die ja auch sehr gute Zitate haben.
MF: Wir benutzen UESP. Fan-Wikis sind nicht unsere einzigen Quellen, da wir auch die anderen haben. Wir nutzen sie alle.
ESP: Glaubst du es ist ein Vorteil, dass TES so eine riesige Marke geworden ist? Hat es deine Arbeit als Creative Director beeinflusst? Oder hättest du lieber einen kleineren Titel?
MF: Es ist toll, weil es Elder Scrolls ist, aber als wir das Spiel begonnen haben war Skyrim noch nicht erschienen. Es gab nur Morrowind und Oblivion und einen riesigen Kontinent mit vielen Möglichkeiten. Mit Skyrim kam ein größerer Druck sicherzustellen, dass Skyrim Fans in ESO glücklich werden, aber jetzt ist alles gut. Es gibt so viele Fans der Marke, dass das Spiel alleine aufgrund des Elder Scrolls Namen beliebt ist. Der Druck ist also sicherzustellen, dass jeder glücklich ist, der anfängt das Spiel zu spielen. Bei unserem Launch waren wir noch nicht ganz an unserem Ziel. Als wir es ein Jahr später für die Konsolen veröffentlicht haben, hat es sich viel mehr wie das Spiel angefühlt, dass “The Elder Scrolls “-Konsolenspieler spielen wollen würden.
